Setting the Scene: Luna Lovegood

She stumbled and fell down on her knees, gasping as her stockinged legs came in contact with the snow. The warming spell she cast on her toes was starting to wear out. She remained seated on the crisp snow and looked up. The world was coated in frosting. The ground reflected the skies, she thought. It felt like she was sitting inside a hollow snowball. Luna Lovegood sighed again and laid down on the snow, her disheveled blonde hair fanning out under her. Her silver eyes on her pale face blended with her surroundings. She feels like snow herself. She reached up, her gloved hands outlined against the clouds. All around her fell a flurry of flakes--frozen stars, soft and sighing against her hair.

As she was pondering how Dabberblimps react to snowflakes, a flop landed on her right. She looked at the figure beside her. Hermione's soft, pink features were looking at her, beaming. She heard another flop on her left and saw Harry Potter, his glasses askew. She saw Ron approach and landed on the snow beside Harry. All four of them laid out on the snow in the middle of Hogsmeade ignoring the looks of passers-by. "What are we looking at?" Ron asked.

"Old ang graying Nargles?" Harry answered, a smile on his lips.

Luna let out a laugh so delightful and loud. The trio looked at her, surprised. Her laughter eventually drew out theirs.

Finally, Harry wiped the tears from his eyes and stood up. He shook the snow from his messy hair, and gave Ron a soft kick. "Come on," he said, "let's get Butterbeer." Hermione helped Luna up, and all four of them walked towards the Three Broomsticks. Hermione re-cast a warming spell on their shoes, including Luna's.

As a tribute to Harry Potter's 20th anniversary, I wrote about one of the recurring themes of the series: friendship. The books taught so much about it, and it became a sort of stand-in for me. The books became my best friends.

Luna is one of my favorite characters. I have always admired her eccentricity and honesty. I love the idea of the Golden Trio befriending Luna Lovegood and accepting her for all her quirks, even if they don't understand her most of the time.
